Generator Fuel Types
- Liquid Propane (LP): Propane is the most popular fuel for residential standby generators because of the availability of propane.
- Natural Gas (NG): Natural Gas is also an fuel option used in residential generators, though not as popular as propane.
- Diesel: Diesel fuel is used almost solely in commercial or industrial grade generators. Homeowners could choose a residential sized generator fueled by diesel fuel, but we do not recommend the choice because of the higher maintenance requirement of the homeowner and higher cost.
- Gasoline: Gasoline powered standby generators are not reliable for various reasons and ultimately is could not be relied upon to run a standby generator in an emergency situation. Many smaller, portable generators units are designed to run reliably on gasoline.
